Star Drug Store, located on 23rd Street in Galveston, is a must-visit breakfast and brunch restaurant. The menu boasts a variety of options including fresh salads, housemade soup, hot and cold sandwiches, burgers, breakfast (Mon-Fri), brunch (Sat, Sun), and soda fountain classics. Guests can enjoy their meals at cafe tables or at the vintage soda counter which adds to the charm of this historic establishment.
Speaking of history, Star Drug Store has an interesting one. Originally built in 1886 by the Scanlons family, it was designed by one of Galveston's most renowned architects Nicholas Clayton. The building was converted to brick in 1909 by Charles J. Michaelis without compromising Clayton's design. In 1917, a tile horseshoe-shaped soda-fountain counter was added to the pharmacy making it a fully operational drug store.
The Star Drug Store also played an important role in altering history when it became the first desegregated lunch counter in Galveston under the ownership of George Clampitt and Grady Dickinson who operated the store until 1982.
Despite changing ownership several times over the years and facing a severe fire in March 1998 that closed the store indefinitely, Star Drug Store reopened its doors in November 2001 under new ownership.
