We want to thank Houston for such an incredible response to our last video. We definitely did not expect for it to be heard so loudly, but we appreciate the concern. We were flooded with similar stories from both local businesses and residents, many of whom expressed fear of speaking up due to retaliation. We’ve tried to pass on these stories, which include frustrations about the difficulty of accomplishing basic tasks like getting groceries into their homes or getting their pets to the vet.
We’ve met with and they’ve confirmed that pedestrians were turned away from Hutchins St on the first day of FanFest due to concerns about blocking ambulance access. They’ve since reassessed and are allowing for foot traffic onto our street. We’ve spoken with Councilman who is working to provide access for food delivery services in the neighborhood so that businesses can continue to serve the community around them. will be helping coordinate an airconditioned rest area and bathrooms for police, firefighters, and first responders. A large number of people have expressed interest in biking over - we are confirming with HPD that bikes will be let through, but kindly ask that bikers enter on Lamar St to keep Hutchins St clear for ambulances.
This neighborhood has played a very important part in my life. My parents were married here, and I worked my first job frying fish & doughnuts in a family shop. I grew up playing Street Fighter in the Asian grocery stores that once defined this area. This neighborhood was an important meeting point for the refugees from Cambodia & Vietnam, many of whom lived in refugee camps together before immigrating to Houston. With the highway expansion project, the last of these businesses are being demolished. We hope that we’ll be able to showcase this history for visitors and remind people that this was once Houston’s Asiatown.

So….? This is what gentrification looks like, First, it’s displacing local businesses with corporations. Then, they’ll choke out all locals until we can’t afford to operate. The FanFest is stacked high with food trucks and a food hall provided by big Aramco. Houston, please do better.
