Shannon Ingrassia-Murphy, Pop-Soul Singer, Server and Storyteller at Snooze The Strand at Huebner Oaks, explains to us why is important to her and her family.

“Black History Month is important to me and my family because it is one of the only mainstream ways that America will recognize the Black struggle. A lot of our history has been watered down, or mis-told, and so Black History Month is an opportunity for us to vocalize our own stories. Did you know almost 500 pieces (on average) of Black History Documentation has been destroyed across the U.S in just the last 10 years? This is one of the major reasons why keeping the tradition of Black History Month alive is so important not just to my family but to all African American families residing in the United States of America.”

Meet Shannon Ingrassia-Murphy 👋 This Pop-Soul Singer, Server and Storyteller at Snooze The Strand at Huebner Oaks, tells us how she recognizes and honors through music and culture:

“I am a pop-soul singer who writes original music, much of which is with the help of my African American-Irish-Cherokee Indian father who had a band of his own back in the 80s. Music is such a unique and transparent way to educate and remind ourselves of our History. 400 years ago, music was used as a way for slaves to communicate in code, worship through times of trial, and would give our ancestors an outlet to dance and celebrate their own small wins. Music will forever be tied to Black History Month, and I am proud to take that legacy on as my own as well.”

Billie Holiday, Nina Simone and Aretha Franklin are three women who Shannon is inspired by.

“These women always made it a point to speak about Black Civil Rights within their music. They stood with confidence in their Activism, and never let money, fame or talent get in the way of fighting for their fellow Black man… I can only hope that I continue to live my life in the same way as these women.”
