We wanted to let you know that the parking lot shared by Axelrad, Luigi’s Pizzeria, and Retrospect is now a paid lot, and we wanted to address why. The short answer is that those funds are being used to hire security to make parking safer for everyone. The longer answer is... longer.
First, we completely understand the frustration. Nobody gets excited about paying for parking. For years, that lot (and the surrounding areas) has been a frequent target of car break-ins and theft. In fact, this past year was one of the worst we’ve seen, with multiple incidents affecting our guests every week.

Over the years, we tried just about everything we could think of. We have customers fill out police report forms. We partnered with the Midtown Management District and their Seal security team. We added more lighting. We installed cameras. We added blinking security lights and increased visibility. None of it stopped the break-ins. At the same time, cars from nearby institutions, schools and businesses would often fill the lot all day and night, making it difficult for guests of Luigi’s, Retrospect, and Axelrad to find parking when they arrived.

With this paid lot, manned security has been hired to not only patrol the paid lots, but also instructed to patrol Winbern St. , Jackson St. and Alabama St. One thing you can do to prevent break-ins wherever you park is to ensure any valuables are not left in plain view. We have never seen a break-in happen when there was not a target worth stealing. We have always allowed customers to store backpacks in our office, and if you are ever parking somewhere questionable, please ask the establishment to do that for you.

Thank you for sticking with us, for sharing your feedback, and for supporting local businesses like Axelrad, Luigi’s, and Retrospect. 💜💜💜
