🚨 Have you noticed how many independent restaurants have closed lately? Have you noticed how many places are now doing “cheap-eats specials” in hopes to draw a lunch or dinner sales? Take advantage of those specials and support local n help keep those doors unlocked!

Have you driven by a place you used to love only to see a “For Lease” sign in the window ?!

I don’t think it’s your imagination.

From conversations we’ve had with restaurant owners, commercial real estate professionals, investors, and others in the hospitality business, I believe we’re in the middle of a major shakeout in the independent restaurant industry—and I don’t think it’s over yet.

The numbers seem to support it.

According to Technomic, more than 9,500 independent restaurants closed across the United States in 2025, while large chains continued to expand. Bigger brands can negotiate lower food costs, spread marketing expenses across hundreds of locations, and absorb rising costs much more easily than a single neighborhood restaurant.

Meanwhile, independent operators are being squeezed from every direction.

Food costs remain significantly higher than they were just a few years ago.

Payroll, insurance, utilities, rent, property taxes, and credit card processing fees continue to climb.

To survive, restaurants have had to increase menu prices—but many customers have started eating out less often because their own household budgets are under pressure.

Then there’s alcohol.

For decades, beverage sales were one of the biggest profit centers in the restaurant business. Today, many operators say customers are ordering fewer drinks or skipping alcohol altogether, taking away one of the margins that helped keep restaurants profitable.

Houston is a good example.

The Houston Chronicle reported more than 100 restaurant closures during 2025, and the trend has continued into 2026, with longtime favorites continuing to close their doors.

This isn’t just affecting mom-and-pop restaurants either.

We’ve seen major financial problems, bankruptcies, or significant downsizing from national brands including Red Lobster, TGI Fridays, Denny’s, Ho***rs, Red Robin, and others.

The restaurant business has always been one of the toughest industries in America.

Right now, it may be tougher than it’s been in decades.

So if there’s an independent restaurant you genuinely enjoy, don’t wait until you read on Facebook that they’re closing.

Go eat there.

Take your family.

Meet a client there.

Leave a great tip.

Write them a Google review.

Recommend them to your friends.

Those simple things really can make a difference.

Because once a great local restaurant closes, it’s usually gone for good—and our communities lose a little bit of what made them unique.
