🚨 When a Delivery Truck Hits Your Food Truck at an Event… Here’s What Every Food Truck Owner Needs to Know 🚨

This week at an event, our clients’ serving awning was damaged when a delivery truck attempted to pass by their food truck and struck the open awning.

Thankfully, no one was injured, but it serves as a reminder that accidents can happen to any food truck owner, even when you’re parked and operating legally.

As someone who works with food truck owners every day, here are the steps we recommend taking immediately if this ever happens to you:

âś… 1. Take Photos and Video Immediately
Document everything from multiple angles before anything is moved. Get photos of:

* The damage
* The other vehicle
* License plate
* DOT numbers
* Company logos
* The surrounding area

âś… 2. Get Driver Information
Collect:

* Driver’s name
* Phone number
* Driver’s license
* Insurance information
* Employer information

âś… 3. Get Witness Statements
If vendors, customers, or event staff saw the accident, get their contact information.

âś… 4. Call Local Law Enforcement
Even if the damage seems minor, an accident report can become critical if insurance disputes liability later.

âś… 5. Notify Your Insurance Company
Call your commercial auto and business insurance carrier immediately.

Many food truck owners don’t realize that physical damage to equipment like awnings, serving windows, generators, and attached equipment may be covered differently depending on the policy.

âś… 6. Do Not Repair Anything Yet
Wait until insurance adjusters inspect the damage unless temporary repairs are needed to safely operate.

âś… 7. Get a Repair Estimate
Contact your trailer manufacturer or a qualified repair facility to document the repair cost.

đź’ˇ Important Insurance Tip

If a commercial vehicle (FedEx, UPS, Amazon, utility truck, etc.) damages your food truck, their commercial liability policy is typically responsible for repairs if their driver is at fault.

You may also be able to recover:

* Repair costs
* Temporary loss of business income
* Rental equipment expenses
* Graphic wrap replacement costs

Many owners leave money on the table because they only request repairs and don’t ask about business interruption losses.

Food truck owners work too hard to absorb costs caused by someone else’s mistake.

Accidents happen. Documentation wins claims.

🚚 Curious About Food Truck Economics? Here’s the Breakdown! 🌮

Ever wondered how much a typical food truck actually makes in a day? If you’re dreaming of starting your own mobile food business or just love the food truck scene, let’s pull back the curtain on the financials, operating hours, and key metrics.

Here’s a realistic look at a food truck operating Tuesday through Sunday (6 days a week):

đź’° Daily Revenue Expectations

While numbers vary wildly by location and concept, a typical food truck generates anywhere from $400 to $1,000+ per day.

On a busy Saturday, you might easily cross the $1,000 mark, while a slower Tuesday might bring in $500.

Annually, many successful trucks average between $250,000 and $500,000 in gross revenue!

⏱️ Hours of Operation & Breakdown

Operating a food truck is more than just the hours the window is open. A typical day looks like this:

• Prep & Loading: 2-3 hours (chopping, marinating, loading the truck)
• Travel & Setup: 1 hour (getting to the spot, firing up equipment)
• Service Window: 4-6 hours (the money-making hours!)
• Breakdown & Cleaning: 1-2 hours (scrubbing down, driving back to the commissary)

Total: A 4-hour service window often means a 9 to 12-hour workday.

📊 Key Performance Indicators (KPIs) to Track

If you want to be profitable, you need to know your numbers:

• Revenue Per Hour: If you’re open for 4 hours and make $800, your revenue per hour is $200. This helps you decide if a location or event is worth your time!
• Average Ticket Size: How much does each customer spend? (e.g., $15-$20). Upselling sides and drinks is crucial here.
• Service Speed: How many tickets can you push out per hour? Faster service = more revenue during peak lunch rushes.

đź’¸ The Cost Breakdown
Revenue isn’t profit! Here is how the costs typically shake out:

• Food Cost: 25% (A great target to keep your margins healthy)
• Labor Cost: 25% (This includes owner compensation if you are working the truck)
• Overhead & Profit: The remaining 50% covers your commissary kitchen, fuel, insurance, maintenance, permits, loan payments, and ultimately, your net profit (which typically lands between 6% and 15%).

🏦 What About the Loan?
Unless you have cash on hand, you’ll likely need financing. Here is what typical monthly payments look like:

• Trailer Loan: $800 - $1,600 / month (Trailers are more affordable but require a heavy-duty tow vehicle).
• Food Truck Loan: $2,800 - $3,400 / month (Fully motorized, built-out trucks are a bigger investment but offer more mobility and convenience).

Operating a food truck is an incredible, rewarding grind. It takes great food, smart location scouting, and a tight grip on your KPIs to succeed.
