A long history can shape not just a restaurant, but its identity. At Christie’s Seafood & Steaks, the legacy of Greek immigrant founders continues through both the food and the family that runs it today. Even the classic po’boy remains a constant through the years. 👇

Houston has long nursed a reputation for its “bulldozer” attitude toward growth by prioritizing new development over historic preservation. While there are many examples of things we lost, the city has gotten better at protecting its historic structures and promoting cultural institutions that m...

On International Women’s Day, we celebrate the women helping carry Christie’s Seafood & Steaks into its next century.

Owner Alexandra Christie and General Manager Maria Christie continue the family tradition that began in 1917, when the first generation opened the doors to what would become Houston’s oldest restaurant.

More than a century later, Christie’s remains family-owned, woman-led, and proudly part of Houston’s history.

Here’s to the women who preserve traditions and build the future.

Preppy is coming back — and apparently, we never left. 🤍💙💚
We’re truly honored to be featured in Town & Country’s March 2026 story highlighting cities where preppy style lives on — and to represent the U.S. with Christie’s Seafood & Steaks.

Since 1917, we’ve believed tradition, white tablecloths, and Gulf seafood never go out of style.

Thank you, Town & Country, for the beautiful mention — and thank you to Houston for loving us for over a century.

Thanks for the review on our Seafood Gumbo! We love it too! Thank you Chris Shepherd!

"Hands down the best seafood gumbo I've ever had! I even ordered one to take home. The service was excellent! My husband had the shrimp combo and it was indeed the best fried shrimp we've had anywhere. Thank you, Eat Like a Local, for showing this native Houstonian/Local what Christie's has to offer, it was a great experience on 11/23/25 around 5pm. Thank you!!"

If you missed yesterday’s episode of Eat Like A Local on KPRC Ch. 2, watch it online at the link in our bio.

“In this episode of on - host learns the history behind two long standing Houston restaurants that offer a delicious reminder of the Greek immigrant influence on Houston’s culinary roots.”

“At Christie’s, Houston’s longest running restaurant, Maria Christie tells Chris the story behind their third-generation family-owned restaurant, which was founded in 1917 by Theodosios Christofidis: a Greek immigrant who Americanized his name to Theodore Christie.”

“Mr. Christie got his start selling fish sandwiches and Gulf shrimp along Galveston’s waterfront. In the 1930s, he moved to Houston, building a restaurant on South Main Street. Having no children of his own, Christie eventually offered the business to his longtime employee James Priovolos (Maria’s father) on the condition that James would change his last names to “Christie”. James agreed and the restaurant passed into the hands of a new generation.”

“Today, James’ wife Alexandra Christie and their children carry on the legacy and continue to serve their iconic famous Fish Sandwich and Wild Caught Texas Gulf Shrimp, alongside Greek inspired dishes like Shrimp Santorini and Taramasalata dip - a whipped Greek Caviar that Chris says should be sold by the quart!”

11/17/2025

The Christie family was honored to be featured in this campaign for and via spotlighting our family-owned small business of 108 years!

“Christie’s Seafood & Steaks has been a part of Houston’s history since 1917, when Greek immigrant Theodore Christie began selling fried fish sandwiches along the Galveston waterfront. Christie before moving inland to Houston to open several full-service seafood restaurants.

Fast forward to 1955, when Theodore met fellow Greek immigrant James Privolos, whose work ethic reminded him of himself. As Theodore did not have family to inherit the business, he passed the restaurant to James and his brother.

Today, after surviving two pandemics and more than a century of change, James’s wife, Alexandra, and their children currently run the restaurant’s singular Houston location. Visitors from Texas and beyond come to try their famous wild-caught Texas shrimp and experience a living piece of state history.

Christie’s Seafood & Steaks stands as an example that when you lead with passion, tradition, and community, great things last. And with the added support of American Express small business resources, the Christie family has the tools to help continue their legacy for generations to come.”

From our family to yours - thank you!
