Five years ago today, on August 16, 2021, I came face‑to‑face with death.
My fever stayed at 103.5° for five days, and I was panting, fighting for every breath. I could barely speak, barely move, barely hold on. When paramedics finally reached me, my blood oxygen was 38% — a number most people never come back from. I truly thought my life was ending.And while I was fighting for my life, my mother was fighting for hers.
One day apart, we were both in the hospital battling the same storm.I survived.
She didn’t.On September 29, 2021, my mother took her last breath — and my life continued.
Not because she “gave up,” but because her body had fought as long as it could.
And every day since, I’ve carried the weight and the gift of still being here.Today, I honor her strength.
I honor her love.
I honor the woman who shaped me, covered me, prayed for me, and walked through the valley at the same time I did.And I honor my own survival — not with pride, but with purpose.
I’m still here.
Still breathing.
Still building.
Still becoming.This day is my reminder:
Her story lives in me.
My survival is not an accident.
And I will continue to live in a way that honors the woman who gave me life — twice.

I must share with you.
Guilt has a way of settling into the quiet places of the soul.
Not because we did something wrong, but because we wish we had known what we couldn’t have known.I’ve carried the weight of attending a wedding on August 1, 2021, not knowing COVID was in the room. Not knowing my cousin was sick.
Not knowing the virus would reach my mother. Not knowing she would be gone weeks later.
I'm struggling today to let go of the guilt for staying when I only planned to deliver and setup the wedding cake. I'm struggling today to let go of the bitterness I harbor. August 1, 2021 will forever be etched in my memory as the day of regret.
