A quick update! (But kinda long)
Since we closed the restaurant just over 2 years ago, a lot has happened.
We spent the first 8 months liquidating equipment, furniture and anything from the restaurant that we couldn't use on the food truck. It took a while to clear out the storage unit!
All along were remodeling the food truck. Removed the 9 year old wrap and replaced with a sleek paint job and decals. It looks new again. We did some much need engine and mechanical repairs and also remodeled the kitchen.
Next we moved the food truck to new Braunfels, Tx, where I was living in my RV mostly at the New Braunfels RV park with the food truck stored next to me. We re-imagined our menu by doing daily plate specials of our most popular items, like Rouladen, Sauerbraten, Schnitzel and Brats. Serving up our made from scratch German sides (spaetzle, red cabbage, pan fried potato, etc).
We set up in a fabulous location on Landa Street. We were open for dinner 4 nights a week, but unfortunately could never make a profit. We did our best to market our business, but it barely made a difference. The feedback was that our customers really wanted a situation where they could sit and eat the food comfortably on location. Air conditioning, protection from the weather, restrooms and alcoholic beverages were our top requests. Basically, folks wanted to eat these meals in a restaurant and not get them as take out from a food truck, even though we were selling our meals for super cheap.
We gave up after a few months and I was tired of living in an RV. We decided to get a place to live in nearby San Marcos, TX where my 2 girls could live also while attending TXST.
We reverted back to our regular food truck menu and tried to hit the streets, going to schools, neighborhoods and apartments. Again, we just couldn't make a profit. Even times when we had a crowd, it seemed no one in New Braunfels wanted German food. The burger truck and the taco truck next to us were slammed.
We started serving lunch on TXST Campus and finally found success. The students, faculty and staff have showed us much love. At the end of this month and the month of February, you can find us Monday to Thursday serving lunch in the Qaud (heart of campus)!!!
We continue to serve at every Tomball German Fest (every March and December) and this year we were invited to serve at Wurstfest in New Braunfels. Tomball German Fest has always been our Jam and we love everyone there. So much love!
Wurstfest did not turn out so well for us. We ended up in a terrible location, away from all the action and foot traffic in an area where food has never been sold. It was a very nice location to ourselves with many tables in front of the truck, but we just didn't have the foot traffic. Location, location, location. Despite selling half of projections, we did make many new friends and seemed to be well liked by those that found us. They loved the Currywurst and the Schruben for sure.
We have discontinued doing any event that can't guarantee a minimum sales and love to do catering. Unfortunately, these types of events and catering opportunities have yet to emerge.
At this point we are out of ideas. We may continue serving TXST and do festivals mostly until I get too old. A restaurant is now out of the question. Real Estate is way too much $$$ in New Braunfels and I haven't found a partnership with a brewery or bar that works.
In the meantime and in between time, I am honing my skills to be a travel agent. I am very good at building memorable travel experience and hope to help others to see the world and experience new places. I am focusing on booking cruises at the moment, but land based travel to Mexico and Europe will also be my specialty. The goal is to build "come-a-long" trips where I take groups on the trip and make sure they are well taken care of.
I hope you will give me a chance to book your next vacation! You will find me on all the social media platforms AND YouTube. I am working to add tons of content now and I can't wait for it to take off!!!
I am currently working under the guidance of Accent Travel in San Antonio. A family owned independent travel agency with Brick and Mortar. Wonderful company and I am excited to be a part of it.
